Honoring the Legacy: A Salute to who have served with valor | Veteran's Day

Updated: Nov 22, 2024

Ah, Veteran's Day… A moment of reflection, respect, and pride. Today, as the world slows down to honor those who have worn the uniform and served with valor, I find myself especially moved. Not only because I am now one of those service members, but because I’ve come to realize how profoundly this path shapes a person, shapes a community, and ultimately, shapes a nation.

Military

Being part of the U.S. Army has opened my eyes to a whole new world of commitment, discipline, and camaraderie. The journey is far from easy – the hours are long, the challenges are many, and sometimes, the sacrifices feel almost overwhelming. But there’s something profoundly fulfilling about it too. Each day, I’m reminded that we stand on the shoulders of giants: the veterans who came before us, who paved the way with resilience and courage.

Veteran's Day isn’t just about thanking those who served; it’s about understanding what that service means. It’s about acknowledging that the freedom and privileges we enjoy come at a price, a price paid by countless men and women who selflessly put the nation’s needs above their own. These are individuals who missed holidays with their families, who braved unimaginable hardships, who faced fear head-on to uphold the values we hold dear.

So, to every veteran reading this – from the bottom of my heart, thank you. Thank you for your service, your dedication, and the sacrifices you’ve made. You inspire those of us who are still in uniform to carry forward that legacy with pride and honor.

In the U.S. Army, there’s a saying, "This we'll defend." It’s not just a motto; it’s a reminder of the strength, courage, and loyalty that defines our military community. And today, as we celebrate Veteran’s Day, I hope we can all take a moment to honor the depth of that commitment. Whether you're a soldier, a family member, a friend, or simply someone who respects our armed forces, let’s remember that this day isn’t just a holiday – it’s a testament to the bravery and endurance of those who served.

So, happy Veteran's Day, from one soldier to another. Let’s carry the torch forward, honoring the past and looking to a future where service and sacrifice are always celebrated and remembered.

A Look Back: The History and Legacy of the U.S. Military

The United States Military — an institution rooted in courage, innovation, and resilience. Its history is as rich and complex as the nation itself. Today, as a proud member of the U.S. Army, I often reflect on the monumental legacy that each soldier, sailor, marine, airman, and guardian has contributed to this story. From the Revolutionary War to modern-day operations across the globe, the U.S. military has evolved into a force that not only defends its nation but also champions values of freedom, justice, and equality around the world.

The Early Days: A Revolutionary Beginning

The U.S. military’s story began with the American Revolutionary War in 1775. The Continental Army was formed under General George Washington, a small but determined force fighting for independence from British rule. Back then, the military wasn't nearly as organized or powerful as it is today. The soldiers were primarily volunteers, coming together from the thirteen colonies to fight for a common cause. They lacked formal training, proper equipment, and often even basic necessities. But they compensated with sheer willpower and a drive for independence that ultimately shaped the birth of the United States.

The Civil War: A Battle for Unity and Equality

In the 1860s, the nation was divided in one of its darkest times — the Civil War. This conflict tested not only the U.S. military but also the nation's values and sense of identity. With the Northern Union Army facing the Southern Confederate Army, the Civil War became a pivotal point in American history. It wasn’t just a fight for unity; it was a battle that led to the abolition of slavery and a shift toward equality and civil rights. The Civil War’s brutal nature and the sacrifices made by soldiers on both sides left an indelible mark on American military culture and history.

World Wars: Emerging as a Global Power

The early 20th century brought the United States into the global spotlight. During World War I, the U.S. military played a crucial role in helping the Allied forces achieve victory. The experience was transformative, teaching the military the importance of international cooperation, advanced logistics, and modern warfare tactics.

But it was World War II that truly solidified the United States as a superpower. In response to the attack on Pearl Harbor, the U.S. entered the war and eventually played a central role in defeating the Axis powers. The sacrifices made during this time were immense, and the post-war period saw a transformed military with advanced technology and an expanded reach.

The Cold War Era: Deterrence and Global Influence

With the end of World War II came a new kind of conflict — the Cold War. This wasn’t a traditional war fought on battlefields; it was a prolonged period of political and ideological tension with the Soviet Union. During this time, the U.S. military focused on nuclear deterrence and maintaining a balance of power. From the Korean War to the Vietnam War, the military's role shifted as it grappled with complex geopolitical challenges. The U.S. Armed Forces evolved, embracing new technologies like intercontinental ballistic missiles (ICBMs) and exploring space as the next frontier.

The Modern Era: Adapting to New Threats

Today, the U.S. military faces a different landscape. The threats we confront are no longer defined by traditional warfare alone. Terrorism, cyber warfare, and global instability have reshaped military strategy. The 21st century has brought operations in the Middle East, as well as peacekeeping missions and humanitarian efforts worldwide. The U.S. military has also made strides in inclusivity and diversity, allowing more roles for women and welcoming service members from various backgrounds, orientations, and identities.

The Legacy and Responsibility

As I stand here today, a young soldier in the U.S. Army, I feel both the weight of responsibility and the pride of being part of this legacy. The U.S. military is more than an institution; it’s a symbol of resilience and determination. Its history is woven with stories of courage, sacrifice, and the unwavering belief in a brighter future.

For all those who served before me, for all those who continue to serve, and for the generations who will follow, we carry forward the legacy of the U.S. military. It’s not just about defending a nation; it’s about upholding values that make this nation what it is.

To all the readers of NextWaves, especially young dreamers like I once was and still — remember that you, too, can shape history. The path may not be easy, but it’s filled with purpose. Here’s to honoring the past and building the future, one step at a time.
